I started setting tile at 14. Maui is where I sharpened it, on the kind of homes where the shower is bigger than most bedrooms and the client has seen the best of the best. You learn fast there. Salt air, constant humidity, and wet feet every single day punish anything that was not waterproofed right, so I learned to build showers that last.
After years of that, I came home to Michigan and founded Midwest Tile & Stone in 2024. The materials changed, the winters definitely changed, but the standard did not.
I run a one-person shop on purpose. I do the consult, the layout, the prep, the waterproofing, the setting, and the grout. You get one person to call, and that person is the one who did the work.
When I am not on a job I am usually looking at other people’s tile. It is a bit of a problem.
